11th Street Park Saved: It Must’ve Been the T-Shirt

Nancy Greig, the wonderful woman in charge of saving 11th Street Park, recently gave me a t-shirt for the park efforts (I still owe you $20, Nancy!) to wear at a gig I had with my band a few weeks back. I wore it. I guess it worked.

Senator John Whitmire Secures Funding for West 11th Street Park

Austin, Texas — Senator John Whitmire (D-Houston) is pleased to announce that today the Senate and House conferees adopted a state budget which includes $3.75 million in funding for the West 11th Street Park.

“I am pleased we will now be able to pay off the existing loan and keep the remaining 5 acres of the West 11th Street Park. Preserving this park is crucial for the surrounding neighborhoods and for the City of Houston.”

Senator Whitmire included the $3.75 million in the budget for local parks grants within the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife. Within the next few days, the budget will go before the full house and senate for final approval.

I guess the Senator was at the gig.

In all seriousness, a special thanks to Senator Whitmire for helping preserve this amazing piece of inner-city nature. Thanks also to my aunt, who was instrumental in working with the 11th Street Park group.

If you haven’t been, I recommend you go, take a walk and enjoy some beautiful greenspace in our city center.
