The Impact of Loudness

I’ve been mixing my band’s latest CD this week. The mixdown process is complicated and tedious. Unlike when you are recording instruments, this process is all about finding balance among the various tracks of instruments, vocals, etc. One of the key issues for us is making a CD that doesn’t sound compressed like so many records sound today - with few dynamics and a real lack of definition and character.
The video below, which I just found online, does an incredible job of illustrating exactly what I mean - why music today often sounds much worse than music even 20 years ago - and it has little to do with analog vs. digital or vinyl vs. cd’s.
