Jacks On, Jacks Off

Houston’s former KLOL, a station that had been around for years and years, was forced into a format change a while back. Indignant, the station’s management and talent started a new station, KLOI, and continued the tradition of mostly boring slog-rock and predictable bathroom humor morning shows.
I guess fewer listeners wanted them to stick around than they thought because KLOI is about to become Jack FM, a programming format in a number of markets with no dee jays and a playlist of over 1000 songs from the 60’s to modern day. Their tagline is “we play what we want.”
I did a little looksee into their playlists online (not easy to find) and, honestly, it’s nothing special. Think Mix, the Arrow, the Point and a little bit of the oldies station crammed together.
In a couple different playlists I found (anywhere from 30 to 100 song representations), there was very little that isn’t already being played on radio. Granted, not on a SINGLE station, but I’m wondering how many people will want to sit through Madonna to get to Pink Floyd (or vice versa depending on your tastes). I’m sure it will be great for stores, restaurants and places that want variety without eccentricity.
It’s an intriguing concept that may look better in description than it is in reality, but I’ll reserve judgment until I get a chance to listen for myself. Hopefully, it will be better than the lists I found online.
